Cotton is extraordinary. I never knew how much cotton helped me in my everyday life. I just didn’t think about it. Cotton is in the majority of things that I own and use and most likely on the foods I eat as well. I never once considered what cotton was or what it could do, but this past term at school, we have learnt about and studied cotton, in detail. My name is Chloe Campbell and I am a student at All Souls St Gabriels School, currently in Year 11, I am learning about cotton in my Agriculture and Horticulture class. My school is taking part in the Archibull Prize, and through this prize I came to understand how much cotton was in my life.
We had to write a report about cotton farming in Australia, and my teacher was so impressed with the quality of my work that she put it on the school’s blog. This promted me to write my own blog about my relationship with cotton.
I am not a country girl, I do not live on a property but I have gone to a few, I am a city girl. But that doesn’t mean I’m not passionate about the bush. My dad grew up in nothern NSW and his mum owns a dairy farm. He’s done his fair share of farming in life, in dairy and other areas of the industry around Australia, but the connection to cotton in my family comes from my dad’s dad, Pop Campbell. He was involved when they attemted to plant cotton in Western Australia, of course this didn’t work out as well as they hoped, but this got me thinking, what’s the big fuss about cotton?
I mean it’s just a fluffy plant. But as I researched this “fluffy plant” by myself, out of curiositiy, I came to realise that it was so much more than I first thought. Cotton is life. Without cotton, my bed would be unbearable, my clothes unwearable and my life… well I won’t even go there.
My point is that Australian Cotton, is so important I wish that we had a national holiday for the date when the first crop grew on Australian soil and was made into clothes and linens and oil for food and bandages and the list goes on and on and on, but you get the idea.
Cotton makes the world go round.
